I gave my kids the option of trading their candy for stuff that they've been asking for. For 4yo son, that was a Clone Trooper action figure, for 7yo daughter, books were her choice. I figure shelling out $6 or so per kid was worth avoiding the sugar highs and power struggles for the next couple of weeks.

Last year, when goblins and witches approached the door and rang the door bell, the door opened and they were greated with a variety of chocolates - made in the USA - and small containers of play dough. This year play dough was a confirmed hit. Our house is now tagged in the minds of many of the trick or treaters.

So, it might be that one of the solutions is to diversify the halloween offerings so all of that wonderful tonnage of chocolatey, caramel gooey candy does not translate into unhealthy habits. Sharing the haul is also a great idea.
